If you are travelling within the European Economic Area (including Portugal) or Switzerland, you should get a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC entitles you to free or reduced-cost medical care. But you will still need medical and travel insurance for Portugal. Find out the local emergency number and the address of the nearest hospital when you arrive in Portugal. Your local guide should know.

1 - A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving in (or going to as a destination) the Azores or Madeira, if coming from infected areas. However, no certificate is required from passengers transiting through Funchal, Porto Santo and Santa Maria.
